Philippines MBBS Duration
The MBBS duration in the Philippines is structured differently from India and many other countries, but it is well recognized and widely chosen by international students, especially from India. The total duration is around 5.5 to 6 years, depending on the university and the student’s academic progress.
The medical education pathway in the Philippines begins with a Pre-Medical course, which usually lasts 1.5 to 2 years. Common pre-med programs include BS Biology, BS Psychology, or related science courses. This phase builds a strong foundation in basic sciences and is mandatory for students who have completed 12th grade.
After completing the pre-med course, students enter the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, which is equivalent to MBBS. The MD program has a duration of 4 years. The first two years focus on classroom learning, covering subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, and microbiology. The third year emphasizes clinical subjects like medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics, and gynecology. The final year consists mainly of clinical rotations and hospital internships, providing hands-on patient exposure in affiliated hospitals.
Following the MD program, students must complete a one-year internship if required by their home country’s medical council. For Indian students, clearing the FMGE/NExT exam is necessary to practice in India.
Overall, the Philippines offers a structured, English-medium medical education with global recognition and practical clinical exposure, making it a popular destination for MBBS aspirants.
